What to Look For in a Pet Photographer in The DMV

Finding the right pet photographer isn’t just about getting great photos; it’s about finding someone who understands your pet, their personality, and your connection with them. In the DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia area, there are plenty of talented photographers, but not all specialize in working with animals.

If you’re searching for the perfect match, here’s what to look for in a pet photographer in the DMV.

6 Things to Look For in a Pet Photographer

1. Experience Working With Pets of All Kinds

Photographing animals is a completely different skill set from photographing people. You want someone who knows how to read pet body language, use positive reinforcement, and stay patient through every zoomie and squirrel distraction. A great pet photographer also knows how to solicit multiple expressions, from the head tilt to the big grin, and sometimes even tosses treats (provided by Chippin) mid-shot to bring out the perfect reaction. (Yes… I’ve become a bit of a pro at this!)

Look for a photographer who has experience with a variety of breeds and personalities, from shy rescues to high-energy pups, and who can adapt to your pet’s comfort level.

I’ve photographed more than a thousand dogs across the DMV, everything from puppies to seniors, and I love adjusting my approach to fit each pet’s personality.

2. Safety and Comfort Come First

Your pet’s comfort should always come before the perfect shot. Ask how your photographer keeps sessions safe, especially if your dog is reactive, a flight risk, or still learning leash manners.

A great pet photographer will:

  • Use secure, pet-friendly locations

  • Allow leashes in photos (which can be edited out later!)

  • Take frequent breaks and move at your pet’s pace

If your pet is nervous or new to photos, a calm, flexible photographer can make all the difference.

3. A Portfolio That Matches Your Vision

Before booking, browse through their portfolio. Pay attention to the lighting, editing style, and emotion in the photos. Do the images feel joyful and natural? Do they capture real personality?

If you love warm, playful, and connection-focused images, those are my specialty! My goal is to create portraits that show your dog exactly as you know them, joyful, goofy, loving, and totally unique.

4. A Personalized Experience

The best pet photography sessions aren’t one-size-fits-all. Look for someone who takes the time to get to know you and your pet before the session, from your dog’s favorite treat to the type of artwork you’d love to display.

At Happy Paws Photography, I start with a simple phone consultation to plan your session location, style, and artwork goals. Whether you prefer a playful outdoor adventure or a cozy at-home session, we’ll tailor every detail to your pet’s comfort and your vision.

5. A Focus on Artwork That Lasts

After the session, think about how you’ll enjoy your images every day. A professional pet photographer should guide you through choosing printed artwork, like framed wall art, albums, or keepsake boxes — not just send digital files and call it a day.

Your pet’s portraits deserve to live off your screen and into your home, where you can smile at them every day.

6. Local Knowledge and Pet-Friendly Locations

The DMV offers countless dog-friendly parks, trails, and waterfronts, but local knowledge makes all the difference. An experienced local photographer will know where to find:

  • Beautiful light and open spaces

  • Leash-optional areas

  • Spots with minimal distractions

Some of my favorite local session locations include gems like Lake Accotink Park!
