Snow Day Pet Photography Sessions in the DMV

When snow falls in the DMV, it’s pure magic! Especially for dogs who love to jump, play, and roll in it. Each winter, I offer limited-edition Snow Day Sessions —super fun, spontaneous pet photo shoots that create stunning images.

Because snow is rare in the DC area, these sessions are first-come, first-served, and I announce them to my email waitlist as soon as a storm is on the horizon. If you’ve ever dreamed of capturing your pup in a winter wonderland, this is your chance.

How Snow Day Sessions Began

The idea came to me while photographing adoptable pets at the PG County Animal Shelter. One winter, I met a Husky named Akira who absolutely loved the snow. She ran, jumped, and played with pure joy while I photographed her. That session was unforgettable, not just because the images were striking, but because she was adopted almost immediately afterward.

Since then, I’ve dreamed of giving more dogs the same chance to shine in their element, even if we only get one or two snowfalls a year!

What Makes a Snow Day Session Special

Snow Day Sessions are truly one-of-a-kind. Because we never know when (or if!) snow will fall, I only take a few sessions each year, sometimes just two or three. When the forecast looks promising, I notify my waitlist first, then confirm based on road conditions and location safety.

Each session lasts about an hour and typically takes place at a central, scenic spot like Lake Accotink Park, one of my favorite winter photography locations. The soft light, fresh snow, and untouched landscape create an incredible natural backdrop for your pet’s portraits.

What to Expect on Your Snow Day Session

  • Timing: Sessions are booked as soon as snow is forecast, because flexibility is key!

  • Location: I choose a safe, central location (no steep hills or tricky bridges).

  • Transportation: I recommend an all-wheel drive vehicle or carpooling with a friend experienced in snowy conditions.

  • Duration: Each session is a full, outdoor experience lasting around an hour.

Expect cold weather, slow roads, and a little adventure, but the results are worth it.

How to Prepare

  • For your dog: Bring water, a towel, and warm layers if they tolerate them. I’ll handle the treats (from Chippin) and encouragement!

  • For you: Dress for comfort first with waterproof boots, insulated pants, and a cozy “marshmallow” vibe that will photograph beautifully. Avoid light summer clothes; your comfort shows in your expressions!

The more relaxed you are, the more natural your photos will look.

Favorite Snow Day Memories

One of my favorite Snow Day Sessions was with my dog-niece, June, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. It was her first snowfall, and she went from curious to absolutely ecstatic in seconds. She spent the whole day begging to go back outside, and her joy was contagious! Those photos are some of my all-time favorites.

I also can’t forget Akira, the Husky who inspired these sessions. Her joy in the snow was infectious, and knowing that her photo helped her find a forever home made the day even more special.

Artwork That Brings Winter Home

Snow Day portraits make for stunning acrylic wall art; the cool tones and soft light complement many modern spaces beautifully. They also make a perfect addition to a custom album, especially if it’s your dog’s first snow.

Each session is designed to create artwork that feels as magical as the day itself.
