Give Shelter Pets a Second Shot

Professional photography that helps adoptable animals get seen, powered by local and national sponsors who care about their community.

At Happy Paws Photography, giving back to animal rescue has always been part of the mission. The Second Shot program, founded by pet photographer Adam Goldberg of AGoldPhoto, expands that impact by bringing professional adoption photography directly into shelters, helping pets show their true personality while giving sponsors meaningful ways to support animals in need.

As the DC-area associate photographer for Second Shot, I work alongside Adam, participating shelters, sponsors, and the Second Shot team to create images and stories that help pets find homes while helping businesses make a real difference in their local community.

About the Second Shot

A simple idea with a powerful impact

Most shelter pets are photographed quickly during intake, often in stressful environments that don’t reflect who they really are. Second Shot gives them another opportunity.

Through sponsor-funded photography sessions, adoptable pets receive professional portraits designed to highlight personality, warmth, and connection, the qualities that help people stop scrolling and start imagining that animal as part of their family.

Each session includes:

  • Professional adoption portraits

  • Behind-the-scenes photo and video storytelling

  • Collaborative social media sharing between shelters, sponsors, and the Second Shot team

  • Expanded visibility for pets waiting for homes

Because sometimes all it takes is being truly seen.

Why Professional Photography Matters

Today, most adopters meet their future pet for the first time online. That first photo often determines whether someone clicks, shares, or keeps scrolling.

Research has shown that photo quality and presentation influence how often adoption profiles are viewed and shared, which can directly impact adoption interest and outcomes. Some studies suggest that improved photography and visual engagement may significantly reduce average length of stay: one reported reductions of up to 67%, and another study found that simple visual factors, such as eye contact in photos, may reduce length of stay by up to 40%.

While every shelter and every animal is different, the takeaway is simple: when pets are photographed to show personality rather than stress, people connect faster, and connection leads to adoption.

For shelters, that means shorter stays and more space to help the next animal in need.
For sponsors, it means supporting something tangible, visible, and genuinely impactful.

Why Sponsor an Animal’s Second Shot

Sponsoring a Second Shot session allows your business to support their community while receiving authentic, meaningful content you can share with your audience.

Sponsors receive:

  • Professional images from sponsored sessions

  • Behind-the-scenes storytelling content

  • Collaborative social media exposure

  • Positive community visibility tied to real impact

This isn’t performative marketing. It’s real help for real animals, and your audience can feel the difference.
