Pet-Friendly Restaurants and Breweries in the DMV

If you love exploring the DMV with your dog, you’re in luck. Washington DC and Northern Virginia are home to some of the most pet-friendly patios, breweries, and eateries on the East Coast. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite, enjoying a night out, or looking for a dog-loving community hang, these local spots welcome pups with open arms (and often water bowls, treats, or even photo ops).

Here are some of my favorite pet-friendly restaurants and bars in DC, Arlington, Alexandria, and beyond, which are perfect for a post-walk stop, a casual dinner, or a relaxed hangout with your best friend.

(Did I miss one? Shoot me an email to let me know! I’m always up for trying new places.)

Lost Dog Café (Multiple Locations in Northern Virginia)

A local institution and a favorite among dog lovers, Lost Dog Café is known for its massive sandwich menu, creative pizzas, and fun, community-focused vibe. Their patios are dog-friendly, and their mission supports animal rescue, so you can feel extra good about your visit! It’s one of the best places to grab a casual meal with your pup while enjoying a laid-back atmosphere.

My personal fav on the menu is their incredible custom pizzas! I make a horrendous amalgamation of every cheese and topping you can imagine, and it still comes out tasty, even if it looks like Pizza the Hutt from Spaceballs.

Praline Café at Glen Echo Park (Glen Echo, MD)

If you’re looking for a charming, artsy spot just outside DC, Praline Café at Glen Echo Park is a must-visit and one of my personal favorites…oh, and it’s where I met my wife! They offer dog-friendly outdoor seating, and the café even has a photo wall of regular pups who stop by (yes, your dog could become part of café history).

Glen Echo Park itself is a beautiful, historic arts center filled with colorful buildings, creative studios, and lively weekend events. It’s also home to the Spanish Ballroom, a beloved venue that hosts Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing, and other social dances. You may even catch me there on a Saturday night getting my swing-dance fix!

Whether you come for the pastries, the atmosphere, or the dog-friendly patio, Praline Café is a wonderful place to enjoy an afternoon with your pup before or after exploring the park.

Port City Brewing (Alexandria, VA)

If you’re looking for a brewery that loves dogs, Port City Brewing in Alexandria should be at the top of your list. Pups are welcome on their outdoor patio, and they frequently host dog-themed events, fundraisers, and adoption days. It’s a great spot to enjoy a craft beer while your dog soaks in the attention from fellow animal lovers.

Bronson Bierhall (Ballston, Arlington, VA)

A go-to Arlington hangout, Bronson Bierhall has a huge beer hall, plenty of outdoor seating, and a reputation for being incredibly dog-friendly. They even host events with local animal organizations, making it a vibrant and welcoming spot for pet owners. It’s perfect for a casual night out with friends (human and canine). Dacha Beer Garden (Shaw + Navy Yard, Washington, DC)

Dacha is one of DC’s most iconic and dog-friendly outdoor destinations. With long picnic tables, great drinks, and a lively crowd, it’s a fantastic place to socialize your dog while enjoying a beer and delicious food. Both Shaw and Navy Yard locations are extremely dog-friendly and make for great people-watching.

Bunnyman Brewing (Fairfax / Lorton, VA)

With spacious patios and a quirky local legend behind its name, Bunnyman Brewing welcomes dogs both outdoors and in designated indoor spaces. The laid-back vibe and friendly staff make it a great spot to relax with your pup after a park visit or a hike in Northern Virginia.

T.H.A.I in Shirlington (Arlington, VA)

If you’re in Shirlington, one of the most dog-friendly neighborhoods in the region, T.H.A.I in Shirlington is a must-try. Their outdoor patio is welcoming to pups, and the surrounding area is perfect for browsing, shopping, and strolling with your dog before or after your meal.

Hawkers Asian Street Food (Ballston, Arlington, VA)

Located in the lively Ballston neighborhood, Hawkers has a vibrant outdoor patio that welcomes dogs and a menu packed with flavorful dishes inspired by street food from across Asia. It’s a great option when you want something bold, delicious, and pet-friendly.

Busboys & Poets (Shirlington, Arlington, VA + multiple DC locations)

A beloved community hub, Busboys & Poets offers a mix of great food, thoughtful conversation, and dog-friendly patio seating at many of its locations. Shirlington is especially pet-friendly, making it a great place to unwind with your dog after a walk through one of Arlington’s many parks.

Tips for Visiting Pet-Friendly Restaurants With Your Dog

Before you head out, keep these quick tips in mind to make the experience enjoyable for everyone:

  • Aim for off-peak hours if your dog prefers a calm environment.

  • Bring a collapsible water bowl.

  • Keep your dog leashed and close to your table.

  • Treats can go a long way toward helping your pup settle.

  • Always double-check outdoor seating policies because they can vary by season or location.
