“Would you ever travel for a pet photography session?”

The answer is absolutely yes.

I’ve always loved exploring new places and experiencing new cultures. When I travel, my two favorite things to do are learn about the history of a place and dive into the local food scene. As cliché as it sounds, the pizza in Italy still hasn’t been topped for me, and I’m still chasing the perfect carbonara pizza I had there.

One of the coolest places I’ve ever visited was Tallinn, Estonia. From wandering the beautifully preserved medieval Old Town to exploring castles and experiencing traditional sauna rituals, it felt like stepping into another world. Experiences like that remind me how powerful a sense of place can be.

And that same idea applies to photography because location shapes the story we tell through images.

So when a client wants to create something meaningful somewhere special, I’m always open to bringing my camera along.

Meaningful Locations Make Powerful Portraits

Some of the most memorable pet portraits happen in places that mean something to the family.

For some people, that might be a favorite vacation destination. For others, it might be somewhere their dog absolutely loves, even if that place isn’t traditionally “picture perfect.”

I truly believe that if a location matters to your dog, it’s already a great spot for photos.

It could be:

• A beach where your dog runs in the surf
• A national park trail surrounded by mountains
• A favorite vacation destination
• A quiet cabin in the woods
• Or even your dog’s favorite muddy puddle

If that puddle is where your dog lights up with joy, then that’s the best location we could choose.

Personally, I’m especially drawn to landscapes that offer natural beauty and interesting geography. Beaches, water features, and nature trails provide wonderful framing opportunities and a sense of adventure that translates beautifully into photographs.

How Travel Pet Photography Sessions Work

Travel sessions require more planning than local portraits, but the process is very similar once we begin.

Because travel sessions require additional planning, time, and coordination, they are offered as Deluxe or Ultra-Deluxe portrait experiences.

In addition to the portrait package, travel sessions include a customized travel fee that accounts for transportation, lodging, and the time required to plan and photograph in a new location.

Since every destination is different, each travel session is quoted individually based on the location and scope of the trip. In some cases, multiple families in the same destination can share travel costs, making the experience more accessible.

Here’s how the process typically works:

1. Planning the Vision

We start with a consultation where we talk about the location, the type of artwork you’d love to create, and what makes the destination meaningful to you and your dog.

2. Location Research

Just like my local sessions, I spend time researching the location to understand how light interacts with the environment throughout the day. This ensures we photograph your dog in the best conditions possible.

3. Travel Coordination

Travel fees typically include the cost of transportation, lodging, meals, and the time required to travel and plan the session. If multiple families in the same location are interested, sessions can often share travel costs, making destination photography more accessible.

4. The Session Itself

Once everything is planned, the session itself feels very similar to my local portrait experiences, relaxed, fun, and centered around your dog’s personality.

5. Portrait Reveal & Ordering Appointment

After your session, we’ll schedule a portrait reveal and ordering appointment where you’ll see your images for the first time. This is when we go through your favorites together and design artwork that fits your home and your life.

Whenever possible, I love to do these appointments in person so we can view your images at the right scale and plan for how they’ll live in your space. If we’re not in the same location, a virtual appointment works beautifully as well.

The goal is to make sure your images don’t just live on a screen, but become something you can enjoy every day.

Who Is a Destination Pet Session Perfect For?

While anyone can plan a travel session, certain moments in life make it especially meaningful.

Many clients love incorporating their pets into important moments — anniversaries, engagements, or other major life events. I’m actually photographing another engagement-style session soon (Luna’s parents are planning a surprise!).

Pets are family, so it makes sense to include them when documenting meaningful trips. A destination portrait session can turn a vacation into something even more memorable.

Some people bring their dogs along when they visit places they’ve always dreamed of seeing. Photographing those experiences is a wonderful way to capture both the journey and the bond you share with your pet.

These sessions might be the most meaningful of all.

There’s something incredibly special about families who decide to show their senior dog new places — mountains, beaches, forests — before time moves on. Being invited to document those moments is a privilege I never take lightly.

National parks and protected natural areas often provide incredible scenery with waterfalls, rivers, and unique rock formations. These locations are perfect for families who love hiking and exploring with their dogs.

Sometimes the most meaningful location isn’t famous at all.

It could be:

the trail your dog walks every morning
a lake you visit every summer
the backyard where your dog learned to play
or even that muddy puddle they insist on jumping in every time.

If it’s a place where your dog feels joy, it can become the perfect setting for portraits.

Dream Locations for Future Sessions

Because I live in the DMV area, I’m especially excited about destinations with landscapes that are very different from what we have locally.

Places with dramatic geography are particularly exciting to me, like:

• Mountain landscapes
• Waterfalls
• Desert dunes
• Fjords and coastal cliffs
• Tropical forests
• Misty or fog-covered landscapes

One place high on my personal list is Colorado. I’ve never been, but the beauty of the Rocky Mountains has always fascinated me. I’ve also heard the Lindy Hop dancing scene in Denver is fantastic — and I never say no to a good swing dance.
