7 Best Pose Ideas for Your Dog Photography Session

When you book a dog photography session, you’re not just getting portraits, you’re capturing your pup’s personality! During each session, I love finding creative ways to showcase both your dog’s beauty and their spirit. If you’re wondering what kinds of poses work best for your dog’s session, here are a few of my favorites with plenty of inspo from past sessions!

7 Best Pose Ideas for Your Pup

1. The Classic “Perched Sit”

There’s something timeless about a good perched sit. Whether your pup is sitting proudly on a park bench, a log in the woods, or even a low wall, this pose shows off their confidence and poise.

One of my favorite examples is from Puff’s session, where she nailed the perfect sit with ears perked and a curious look toward the camera.

2. The On-the-Go Walk

A simple walk can lead to some of the most natural, storytelling photos. Capturing you and your dog side-by-side or your pup strutting along on their own creates a sense of movement and connection.

Leia’s session is a great example where you can practically feel her joy with every step.

3. Running and Action Shots

Nothing beats the energy of a good action photo! Whether your dog is sprinting across an open field or chasing their favorite ball, these shots capture their pure excitement. This session had some of my favorite running photos with tongue out, ears flying, and total happiness.

4. Splash Time!

For water-loving pups, we can add a little extra fun with splash photos. Whether it’s a quick dip in the shallows or an all-out belly flop, these moments are full of personality and joy. Bandit’s session is one that always makes me smile because he truly embraced his inner water dog.

5. Front Paws Up

This playful pose is great for curious or energetic dogs. Having your pup place their front paws on a log, rock, or small ledge creates a dynamic, engaging photo that feels adventurous. Leia also rocked this pose during her session!

6. The Relaxed “Down” Pose

When it’s time to wind down, a simple “down” pose can make for some of the sweetest portraits. It’s calm, comfortable, and shows your dog’s softer side. These sweet pups show this down pose perfectly!

7. Bonus: Personality-First Candid Moments

Some of the best photos happen between poses, those spontaneous moments where your dog looks at you, tilts their head, or rolls around just being themselves. Every dog is different, and that’s what makes each session special. This session featuring a very happy visla is full of those perfectly candid moments that tell the best stories.

Bring Out the Best in Your Dog’s Personality

No matter which poses we try, my goal is always to capture what makes your dog them. Whether that’s a big goofy grin, a splash in the water, or a quiet snuggle by your side, we’ll create images that celebrate your dog’s one-of-a-kind personality.
